In 2006, the Government of Canada introduced the Universal Child Care Benefit, a payment of $100 per month for each child under the age of six. The monthly payment is actually aimed at helping offset daycare costs, but it comes to parents no strings attached. In other words, it is up to you how you use the $100 per child amount.
To get the UCCB, the child must live with you, and be younger than six years old, and you must be the person who is primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child.
The government says you are the primary caregiver if you’re in responsible for looking after the child’s daily activities and needs. Normally, the government still considers the female parent the primary care giver. However, there is no reason why the father, grandparent or guardian cannot fulfill this role and therefore qualify for the UCCB.
You must be a resident of Canada. Also, either you, or your spouse or common law partner must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, or a temporary resident as defined in the Refugee Protection Act.
If you had been receiving the Child Tax Benefit, you should be already receiving your UCCB for each child under six. If you were getting the CTB and, for some reason you are not getting the UCCB, you need to check with the Government of Canada.
If you were not receiving the CTB and are not already getting the UCCB amount of $100 for each child under six, you can apply online, or get a copy of the application form by calling 1 800 959-2221.
